Salzburg, January 2008

On 24th January I went with English Voices to open Mozartwoche with KV 66. After my first ever night with no sleep I was feeling surprisingly energetic, and went out for a walk after the morning rehearsal.

I came across this intriguing gate, and started up what appeared to be a series of "stations of the cross" boxes. At the top is a church.
From the top I could see out over Salzburg.
I then went for coffee and Sachertorte.

The next day, the delightful Wen-Hao Tsai and I went for a walk along the Mönchsberg. He'd packed lunch at the hotel; I bought some delicious things from the market, including a sort of log of nut-and-fruit-stuffed shortbread. (The other items were no less delicious, merely more recognisable: a chocolate-covered Pfefferküchen and a chocolate-covered pastry.)
The toys museum had an eye-catching display in the balcony. But why?
We took the lift from the Museum der Moderne, not the one shown here. I'm not sure what this is.
At the top we started to get good views. Fortunately although cloudy it didn't rain while we were out, or mist over.

Above the art museum were some outdoor artworks.

We then got on with the serious business of walking the kilometre to the Festung.
Another fortress.

Reinforcement of the rock face made to look natural?

As soon as we got inside the Festung, the steep climb (oops no pictures) was belied by the look of being in a small, level town.

It's a bit dark, but you should just be able to make out the horses. Horses are big in Salzburg.
Sumptuous archbishop's apartments used when he wanted to impress visitors.
On the way down to the funicular.
We took the funicular down; I totally failed to capture the excitement.
One last view, at sunset.
