Tau and freedom

Technology and freedom have preoccupied me increasingly for some years now, intensified by the combination of debate and repressive legislation in this area, particularly since 2000 or so, that achieved phoney legitimacy in the wake of September 11th 2001.

The challenge here is to use computers to make it hard to take away freedoms. I'm thinking of things like anonymised peer-to-peer networking, such as Freenet, and peer-to-peer chat programs such as Jabber (?). Also encrypted file systems that store information securely, and more fundamental technologies such as SSL and SSH that enable some of these.

Pointers to good sites on these subjects welcome. R
