15th September 1918–17th March 2014
My maternal grandfather, a nuclear physicist who spent most of his career at Harwell doing nuclear energy research, including the Harwell Sychrocyclotron, and had the guts to point out on the eve of a major press conference in 1958 that the ZETA reactor had probably not achieved nuclear fusion. For some years he was the nuclear physics editor of Kaye & Laby.
He is the closest I’ve had to a hero.
